Electric Fence
There are several things you can do to make your home safer.
1. If you have a privacy walls around your property this can give the feeling of security but it does not always help. Security walls can actually provide a safe opportunity for a robber to work his way into your home. Once he is over the wall the robber can work on entering the house without being seen by neighbours or people passing.
2.
Install motion sensor lights by all entrances and garden lights with day night sensors (energy savers are excellent an average spotlight uses 250watts that means you can install at-least 20 energy savers all over your garden and use less electricity than 1 x 250watt spotlight)
3. Good locks and strong doors helps, but have a bolt leaver in the inside when you lock up at night Divide your home in the inside so if you hear someone is tampering with the lock on the one side of the house you can slam lock a door and lock him out of your section (a popular example is having a slam lock door in the passage dividing your living area and sleeping area. So if you hear someone in the one section you can all run the other and lock the door. It will give you more time but remember that both sections should have a door to the out side perimeter for escape and when there is a fire)
4. Burglar bars is a good idea Especially Spanish bars that covers the whole window. (but remember to have safe exits in case of a fire - (You can have a Spanish bar that can open from the inside installed for an escape route))
5. Electric fencing and outdoor passives are excellent warning and deterring measures (but beware of cheaper units that do not have anti cloaking or anti tampering integrated in the passive) a good example of a good passive is the watch out passive)

6. Join a reputable security company there are lots of options security with medical assistance (first aid) insurance discounts and free alarms ect.
7. Dont get tricked to leave the safety of your house Robbers have methods to get you to open the door - Like opening all the outside taps and making you think there is a burst pipe - or playing a recording of a crying baby outside your door or a crying puppy Beware to go outside alone first call the police or press the panic button to let your security patrol assist you.
8. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole & start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
9. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
10. Official police figures show there were 18438 residential robberies reported during 2008/9 - an increase of 97.2% since 2003/4 http://www.timeslive.co.za/sundaytimes/article451616.ece/Robberies-in-SA-homes-soar
11.
All the above will not help if the whole family and staff are trained to be security conscious and aware. Remember you are only as strong as the weakest link.
12.
Good habits must be learned like not taking out the rubbish at the same time every week or arriving from the same direction every day. Small changes can just give you the valuable seconds you need

Poor earth grounding. This is were the electric fence gets it strength from. A Minimum of 3 ground rods that is 1 meter long should be used and the first rod should be as close as possible to the Energizer and the 2nd as far as possible. And there after every 50 meters of fence should have a rod added. Does not matter how many strands of wire is being used, 5 lines or 24 lines.
It is always best to use copper rods and put them in a place were there is lots of ground water, for example in the garden next to flowers that will be watered on a weekly basis will help ground your system better. You can even water the ground rods in winter when there is less rain. A other way of measuring how many ground rods you need is to look at your Energizers Joule capacity, One rod per joule should work well if you chose the correct energizer for the size fence you have.
Using different types of materials when you join wires. Don't
do it. When you hook up steel wire to copper electrolysis happens and the metal
becomes corroded, making a poor contact and weakening shocking power.
Inadequate animal training. Each
and every animal must learn that the fence hurts. So please build a handy
training fence, preferably on heavy wet soil. Flag the fence for visibility, If
you have purchased a good energizer you can also drop down the voltage for the
first few days until the animals learned how the electric fencing works and
increase the voltage later again.
Fence posts too close together.
Well this is up to you but electric fencing with bigger spacing between posts
will act like a rubber band and allow the animal to run into the electric fence
without braking the wire and pensioners. But if you have the post to close to
each other it will be more like a wall and something will break. If you have a
fence for mainly security reasons it will be better to have the electric fence
post closer to each other (3 to 5 meters apart) but if you need to keep animals
in or out of the camp the post should be 5 to 8 meters apart to prevent damage
to the electric fence.
Too many Joints. Try and make the least
amount of joints because the electric fence is as week as its weakest joint.
And make sure every joint is a proper contact joint. (Crimp it very well,
rather crimp it an extra time than having a weak joint.)
Proper Clearance. Make sure there is not an old fence or plants that will touch your electric fence in the future and that the wind can not blow something conductive against your electric fence that will give you faults alarms and voltage drops. Or one of the positive wires in contact with the ground or plants or grass.
Poor-quality material Be careful here. Sunlight deteriorates plastic. So buy good-quality, long-lasting material. Make sure that your material you use is resistant to degradation by ultraviolet light.
Solar panels not directly facing the sun. This seems almost too obvious to be a problem. But a solar panel won't function at its potential if not properly installed. For the best result you must know were your optimum position is for each season. If you do not have an adjustable solar panel, adjust it for optimal performance in the winter sun. There is solar calculators on the web like this one http://solarelectricityhandbook.com/solar-angle-calculator.html

Kinks in high-tensile wire. A
small kink in stiff wire will always break. Any damage in the wire causing a
break. Always cut out a damaged section of high tensile wire and splice it.
Incidentally, I have found that a hand-tied square knot makes the strongest
splice.
Wires too close to each other. Keep
them at least 10 cm apart.
Wire too Thin. The
Thicker the wire, the more electricity it will carry. Don't skimp.
Voltmeter. Without
a voltage meter to check how hot a fence is, you're just guessing. And
you will spend hours trying to find a fault.
Inadequate Energizer. A wimpy electric fence energizer gives you a weak fence. Don't skimp here because animals will think a smooth wire fence is a joke without a strong bite, and they'll walk right through it.
Correct Wire vs. Energizer. Cheap wire can have a great conductivity but will only last 2 year. But for a few rand more Galvanized wire will last 5 to 7 years, and it will conduct electricity as far as plain wire. Stainless steel wire will last 15 to 20 years but will only conduct electricity for a short distance. For example a 3 joule energizer will be able to manage a electric fence of 5 to 8 kilometers with cheap wire but good conductive wire that is 1.2mm thick, but Stainless steel 1.2mm thick wire will only be able to do an distance of 1kilometer. But then you can use aluminium wire of 1.2 mm thick and it should reach a distance of 10 to 12 kilo meters and last up to 20 years. Very important to match your Energizer with the correct electric fencing wire.

Questions About Electric Fencing
1 Will it hurt my children?
No, the pulse is intermittent. Should a child or adult touch the fence the immediate reaction is to pull away after initial shock.
2 How good a good deterrent is an electric fence?
Electric fencing is an excellent deterrent visually and from a fear factor. It is designed to keep unwanted people outside. Should it be cut or tampered with the alarm will sound.
3 Do criminals place something like a blanket or rubber mat on the electric fence to climb over it?
Due to the fence design using springs the wire will be shorted out when touching under pressure and trigger the alarm.
4 Is it necessary to connect the electrified fence to the Alarm monitoring company?
There is a definite advantage in doing so.
5 Will it hurt my cat or dog?
Cats are perceptive to the aura of the electricity in the fence. Cats can smell the magnetic field and would not normally approach the electric fence. Dogs will not normally touch a second time and but they will not die should they do so or have any damage to them selves from the electric fence..
6 What would happen if the wires were cut?
It is difficult to cut the electric fencing wire without been shocked. Should this happen the fence will immediately sound the alarm.
7 What sort of voltage is in the fence?
The maximum voltage allowed by law is 10,000 volts and the average setting is between 8000 and 9500 volts to allow for legal tolerance.
8 Will my monthly electricity account increase dramatically?
No, an energizer uses very little power - about the same as your alarm system draws.
9 What happens during a power failure?
The good energizers have a 6-8 hour battery backup and will keep the fence electrified to full power. The energisers are normally set between 7,000 and 11,000 volts.
10 Do branches and foliage have an effect on the fence?
It is best to keep foliage and branches trimmed back as too much foliage drains the power from the fence to earth.
11 Do I only switch on the fence when I go out, or at night time?
No - always keep your Live Wire Electrified Fence on day and night. It is there to keep out intruders every day of the year.
